Music for Life began in 1999 as a class-based program in Syracuse, NY, founded by Tamar Frieden. What started as Toddlers Tango — a music and movement program for young children — has since grown into a lifelong journey of connecting generations through music.

How It All Began

My passion for music and movement started when I was just 12 years old, preparing for my Bat Mitzvah. As part of my acts of service, I began volunteering at a new senior living home across the street from my middle school. I had an hour to spare while waiting for my bus ride home, so I decided to spend that time singing for the residents. I’ll never forget the way their faces would light up when they heard familiar songs — how the music seemed to unlock memories and bring comfort. I had no idea at the time that this experience would shape the rest of my life.

Toddlers Tango and the Birth of Intergenerational Connection

In 1999, after studying dance therapy and becoming a mother of four, I began teaching Toddlers Tango in neighborhood playgroups. I believed deeply that music and movement were essential for children’s development — building confidence, improving motor skills, and creating joyful experiences. In 2004, Toddlers Tango classes were invited to the Jewish Home at Menorah Park. That’s when I witnessed the magic of intergenerational connection firsthand.

The seniors began coming out of their rooms to see the children, tapping their feet and clapping along with the music. What started as a children’s class quickly became a shared experience for both the toddlers and the seniors. A weekly intergenerational class was born — 45 minutes of toddlers (ages 1–4) and seniors (ages 80–100) singing, dancing, and making music together. It was a beautiful reminder that music transcends age and ability, creating bonds and shared joy across generations.

The Evolution of Seniors Samba

As Toddlers Tango grew, I realized the profound impact music was having on the seniors, particularly those in memory care and assisted living communities. Seniors Samba was born out of this realization — a music and movement program designed specifically for memory care and Alzheimer’s communities. Familiar songs are carefully chosen to stimulate memory and encourage movement. Seniors Samba classes engage both the upper and lower body, improving motor skills, coordination, and overall confidence. The playlists are designed not only to bring joy but also to enhance cognitive function and create social connection.

Now, over 30 years after I first sang for seniors as a 12-year-old girl, I am leading music therapy sessions in over 25 senior living communities in San Diego. It has come full circle — what began as an act of service has become my life’s calling and passion. The healing power of music is undeniable, and I am honored to share it with so many incredible communities through Seniors Samba.

A Growing Legacy

Toddlers Tango continues to be a favorite among children and families, with over 1,700 toddlers having participated to date. Many younger siblings have followed in the footsteps of their older brothers and sisters, benefiting from the same foundation of confidence and joy through music and movement. Now, as Music for Life expands, all classes — including Seniors Samba — are being offered at assisted living and nursing homes, deepening the connection between generationsTamar Frieden.
